If you live in an area where winter is synonymous with cold and snow, it's time to get prepared. Take extra precautions to avoid falls, remain healthy and dress warm in order to enjoy outdoor activities.
After the scare and severity of the H1N1 influenza last year, many people learned the importance of preventing the flu by immunizing themselves against the disease. Getting a flu shot has been made easy. No more long lines. Appointments aren't necessary. Just stop by your local pharmacy to obtain your flu shot.
YOU HAVE TWO OPTIONS:
• The shot — when this vaccine containing a dead virus is injected, your body begins building antibodies against the illness. Generally, healthy people as well as individuals with chronic disease, plus children over 6 months of age are approved for this method.
•The nasal spray — this vaccine, made from live, but weakened viruses, does not cause the flu. The body senses its presence on the nasal mucus membrane and mounts an antibody response. It is approved for healthy people between the ages of 2-49, except pregnant women.

Do know someone who boasts about never having to see a doctor? That person may not realize it, but silent diseases run in families, often with no symptoms until complications occur. If your parents have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease or thyroid problems, you too may have one or more of these diseases.
Technology and medications are available to detect and treat silent diseases, prevent complications and prolong life.
Things you can do to protect your health and live longer:
Women: have an annual check up, including blood work, breast exam & mammogram, plus a colonoscopy as ordered by your doctor.
Men: have an annual check up, blood work and a PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) test, plus a colonoscopy as ordered by the doctor.
SILENT DISEASES INCLUDE:
1) Type II diabetes - common in overweight children and adults. Symptoms which include frequent urination, disabling limb pain (neuropathy), kidney damage, heart attack and stroke, may take years to manifest themselves. What to do: If it is in your family or you are overweight, have your sugar levels checked.
2) High Cholesterol - an inherited disorder where fatty deposits develop in the blood vessels. Over time, these deposits may obstruct the flow of blood through the arteries. As a result, the heart and brain don't get the oxygen-rich blood they need which increases the risk of a heart attack and possible stroke. What to do: Have a blood lipid panel drawn to determine your levels and risks. Lower your risks with lifestyle and dietary changes and drugs to normalize levels. Don't wait until you have a heart attack to take action.
3) Hypertension - high blood pressure exists when the blood pressure at rest doesn’t normalize to the 120/70 range. High blood pressure stresses arteries throughout the body and increases the risk for heart attack, stroke and kidney failure. What to do: Use the cuffs in pharmacies or purchase your own. If your systolic blood pressure (the upper number) is persistently above 140, you need medical treatment.
4) Hypothyroidism - is low thyroid. It may progress over years before symptoms are seen, which include: thinning hair, dry skin and weight gain.
What to do: Check a TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone). If the thyroid has failed, the TSH rises and can be monitored to determine the correct throid replacement dose needed.
NOTE: Hyperthyroidism - high thyroid - is not silent. It usually gets your attention with tremors, palpitations, weight loss and insomnia.
5) Liver Problems - two common liver problems are caused by viral hepatitis, alcohol or drug toxicity. If caused by a drug toxicity, stopping the medication terminates the cause and the liver can heal. The viral form may be present for twenty years and identified only when the liver fails. Cirrhosis from excessive alcohol is also often advanced before being diagnosed due to avoidance of medical care and continued drinking. What to do: Liver enzymes released by the damaged organ can be measured in the blood. Referral to a specialist may be necessary. If you drink more than two ounces of alcohol each day consider stopping and check with your doctor.
FLU SYMPTOMS: Abrupt onset fever, headache, sore throat, runny nose, aches, tiredness. Diarrhea and vomiting can occur but are less common.
TO HELP REDUCE YOUR CHANCES OF CONTRACTING THE FLU: wash hands often, avoid hand shakes, door knobs and grocery cart handles. Use alcohol wipes and sanitizer solutions frequently. Avoid others with flu symptoms or coughs.
